A New Model for Safer Healthcare Environments
Healthcare workers — including those in healthcare and social service settings — reported significantly higher levels of workplace violence compared with other industries in 2019. In fact, they experienced about five times the rate of violence-related injuries compared with workers overall.
For healthcare leaders, this statistic reflected a growing crisis.
Existing workplace violence training programs were often not solving the problem. Staff continued to be injured. Patients were sometimes injured because employees lacked the training needed to safely manage aggressive situations. Many organizations struggled with training programs that were rigid, expensive, or difficult to implement across multiple departments.
Healthcare systems began asking an important question:
Is there a better way to approach workplace violence prevention training?
This page explores how Vistelar worked with leading healthcare organizations to rethink the training model and build a more sustainable approach.
Jump to a Section
Workplace violence in healthcare has long been a complex challenge.
Healthcare professionals regularly encounter emotionally charged situations involving patients, families, and visitors. When staff lack effective training in communication, de-escalation, and safe physical intervention techniques, these situations can escalate quickly.
Many healthcare organizations reported common problems with traditional training models:
- Programs were rigid and difficult to adapt
- Training materials were expensive to maintain
- Content could not be tailored to the organization's policies
- Multiple programs were needed for different departments
These challenges made it difficult to implement a consistent, system-wide approach to conflict management.
In 2019, Vistelar began a collaboration with Blackstone Consulting and Kaiser Permanente that would reshape how many healthcare systems approached workplace violence prevention training.
At the time, Vistelar was widely known for its conflict management training in law enforcement and public safety, but had limited exposure within healthcare.
Blackstone Consulting held the security contract for Kaiser Permanente and was responsible for training 200,000 staff members nationwide.
This partnership created an opportunity to rethink how workplace violence training could be delivered across a large healthcare system.
As Vistelar worked with healthcare leaders, it became clear that the problem was not simply the training content.
The training delivery model itself needed to change.
Within 12 months, Vistelar shifted its business model to focus on:
- Flexibility
- Customization
- Cost-effectiveness
Instead of delivering a single rigid program, the goal became building a system that organizations could adapt to their own culture, policies, and operational realities.
This approach was grounded in the Unified Conflict Management System™, which provides a structured framework for preventing, managing, and responding to conflict across the entire spectrum of human interaction.
Using this framework, Vistelar developed a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention, Management, Interventions, and Stabilization program designed specifically for healthcare environments.
The program addresses the full continuum of conflict:
- Early conflict recognition
- Verbal de-escalation
- Crisis communication
- Safe physical intervention
But solving the training challenge required more than just curriculum.
Healthcare systems also needed better access to training materials and implementation resources.
Digital Access to the Entire Program
To support this need, Vistelar created a digital training portal that provided healthcare systems with access to the entire training program.
The portal includes:
- Reference manuals
- Skills rubrics
- Training videos
- Lesson plans
- Slide decks
- Participant workbooks
This eliminated the need for organizations to purchase separate training materials.
All program resources are included within the licensing agreement.
Customizing Training for Each Healthcare Organization
Another key innovation was the ability to customize training for each healthcare system.
Organizations could incorporate:
- Their own logos and brand identity
- Leadership messages from executives
- Scenario-based training aligned with internal policies
Using avatar-based simulations, healthcare systems could create training scenarios that reflected the real situations their staff encounter every day.
This customization helped ensure the training felt relevant and practical for staff.
As healthcare organizations learned about the new approach, many began asking about the licensing model that supported it.
Rather than simply describing the program, Vistelar began creating demo portals for prospective clients.
These portals allowed organizations to:
- Review the full program
- Explore training materials
- Compare it with their existing training
- Share it internally with leadership teams
If organizations wanted a deeper understanding, Vistelar would also conduct on-site demonstrations at no cost.
Supporting Implementation From Day One
Organizations that implement the program receive ongoing support.
Each client is assigned:
- A dedicated account manager
- A full implementation team
This team works with the organization to develop a structured implementation and sustainment plan.
They can also provide recommendations on how training content may align with the organization's policies and procedures.
Healthcare leaders were often surprised by how flexible the training could be.
Instead of requiring lengthy training sessions, programs could be delivered in two- or four-hour segments, making them easier to integrate into busy healthcare environments.
To further expand scalability, Vistelar introduced its Master Trainers Program.
This program enables healthcare systems to develop senior internal trainers who can train additional instructors across the organization.
In many cases, organizations can develop dozens of internal instructors without additional licensing costs.
As healthcare systems began implementing the program, many expanded the ecosystem to include additional training initiatives, such as:
- Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) training
- Healthcare security training
- Personal protection training for home health staff
- Active assailant preparedness
- Collaborative culture programs
Together, these programs allow healthcare organizations to build a comprehensive safety and conflict management strategy across the entire system.

As the licensing model evolved, Vistelar partnered with many leading healthcare organizations, including:
- Ascension
- Duke Health
- Inova
- Oregon Health & Science
- Kaiser Permanente
- WakeMed
- CentraCare
- Fairview Health
- MercyONE
- Children’s Nebraska
- Children’s Wisconsin
- U of L Health
and many more.
The Result: A New Model for Healthcare Workplace Violence Prevention
Originally focused on law enforcement training, Vistelar recognized a critical need within healthcare.
By adapting its programs and developing a more flexible training model, the company created an approach that could support healthcare systems at scale.
Today, this model helps hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals build the skills needed to prevent, manage, and respond to conflict safely.
